Essential Driver Training (EDT)

If you have received your first learner permit for Category B (Car) on or after 4 April 2011, then you must  complete a course of 12 EDT hours, before you can sit your driving test.

Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory training course that teaches fundamental driving skills to learner car drivers.

It is part of the RSA's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme and is intended to improve road safety.
EDT is only part of the learning process. The RSA recommend at least 3 hours practice with a sponsor, or your driving instructor between each EDT session, to help you develop your skills.

Your RSA ADI instructor will issue you with a log book on your first lesson and will stamp it after you have completed each EDT session.

EDT Modules

Lessons 1 -8 are to be taken in order and lessons 9 to 12 can be done in any order.

It is also recommended that you read the Rules of the Road and the Learner Driver Syllabus in conjunction with your EDT training.
